Photographer in Residence - New offers for 2017



Photographer in Residence (PiR) embeds Paul's creativity, experience and skill to tell the story of a place. It is a visual record of essence, personality and vibe. He lives in the community to be on hand when the best life and photographic moments happen.

PiR is an affordable, adaptive solution to many of the challenges in capturing regional Australia. It professionally catches moments, light and expressions that defy the scripting of a set shot list. To support this spontaneous photography a PiR also includes a briefed component to cover branding and specific activities /  events.

The program also utilises social media and educational photo walks to engage with enthusiast photographers. The truth in the phrase ‘Everyone is a photographer’ is easily proved on any weekend. Whether with a smart phone, a fashion statement point and shoot or a big black DSLR there are a lot of people out there clicking. Why not encourage them to visit and learn how to best capture and share your area's wonderful scenes and moments?

Motivating visitors to snap away in your neck of the woods encourages longer stays. Photo walks show how to take better pictures of your unique locality. Tapping into this omniscient interest in making and sharing photographs is a key component of PiR. It encourages new and return visits.

Paul’s creative eye and photographic timing will show visitors they don't have to travel to the ends of the world for beautiful, unique photo opportunities. To encourage photo exploration in your region, his pictures are linked to a dedicated social media hashtag with location and photography tips. Visitors and locals are also invited to share their own pictures to create an expanding and enticing visual record.

An extra, important component are the workshops Paul conducts for local business operators. They help small business understand contemporary digital photography. They explain how to use it to engage with customers and visitors. Paul teaches how to utilise existing photo gear and advises on affordable upgrades where necessary. He provides practical lighting and styling hints specific to the product or service. Paul also explains when and how to employ a local professional photographer. The topics covered are set to meet the specific requirements of the attendees.

A PiR program is very adaptable and highly modular so customising to particular needs, conditions and time frames is a key feature. It is designed for regional destinations, councils and organisations to encourage visitors to stick around and explore.

There are 6 interchangeable components that can be expanded, reduced or left out as required.

The photography supplied by Paul is briefed in two parts:

Series of ‘real’ lifestyle and landscape images

  • These pictures are based on a client supplied outline of the activities and locations to be featured. Paul helps with pre-production including liaison, timing, talent and access arrangements.
  • The pictures have a contemporary, editorial style. They rely on Paul observing and engaging with community activities. The photographs are made at times to suit best light and relevance to the activity being photographed. They cover a range of scenic locations, local characters and lifestyle activities including dining, sporting and adventure.
Corporate and branded lifestyle / tourism images.

  • A fully briefed photographic assignment. This imagery is made under usual commissioned assignment arrangements with the client / designer / art director providing a detailed brief. As with any professional assignment the number of images supplied will be set by the brief with adequate time allowed to achieve professional results.
2 / Social Media
During the Residency specific, client owned Twitter and Instagram feeds with a relevant hashtag is managed by Paul Foley and the client. It will include stylised images of the actual shoot as well as portraits and scenes. Client provided Instagrams will be run through the same software as the foleys. A staff rep can be instructed in the use of the apps so that they can apply the same ‘look’ to client generated pictures after the residency.

The Instagram feed will carry on after the residency and be filled by client, local and visitor tagged pictures. It presents as an easy to manage way for your visitors and residents to share their experiences via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

3 / Guided Photo Walks / Instameet
The guided photo walks are based on the popular 'Finding Pictures' workshops Paul has conducted in Sydney's Botanic Gardens for the past several years. The idea behind the walks is to help attract visitors who are photographic enthusiasts.

Walks are generally for 10 people of similar interest or skill levels and run for 2 - 3 hours. They use local features and points of interest to teach the joy and techniques of photography. A walk aimed at enthusiast photographers provides an opportunity to learn creative and practical methods from a seasoned pro. Other walks catering for smart phone photographers or special interests are also popular. Seasonal themes etc can be suggested or specified by the client.

An Instameet can also be organised to engage larger numbers of participants.

4 / Operator Workshops
It is not always practical or timely to employ a professional photographer to capture promotional and sales images. Paul has developed a series of workshops that are tailored to the specific requirements of small businesses and larger organisations. Attendees learn professional techniques and creative guidelines to greatly improve their pictures.

Workshops can also include assessment of existing equipment and procedures, as well as covering creative, technically proficient digital capture, colour management and the storage and distribution of digital assets.

Another key outcome is attendees receive an understanding of what level of photography should be undertaken ‘in house’. They can then make an informed decision on when to hire a local professional and how to formulate a results driven photographic brief.

They are designed for up to 15 participants and can be adapted to specific requirements.

5 / Photo Competition and Gallery (optional)
The photo competition is initially set up by Paul Foley and is based on the social media feeds. After the residency it is easily maintained by the client and should be used to engage with past and potential visitors as well as local residents. The dedicated hashtag will create an online gallery from which 'Photographs of the Month' are chosen. The best are printed to fine art standards and hung in a dedicated mini gallery situated in a visitor centre or other frequently visited location.

6 / Collection of fine art gallery prints
These prints are intended to form part of a Permanent Collection for exhibition as required. While not promotional in the usual sense, Fine Art Collections engage on a personal and creative level. They tell the story of a place in an artistic and memorable way. Such collections are useful for exhibition in Sister Cities and as part of interstate and overseas tourism and trade missions. It can be a unique publicity tool that provides a point of difference when promoting a region’s identity.

The residency includes 8 prints on museum quality 16” x 20” archival paper. Larger sizes or prints on special media can be specified at extra cost.

Costs
A limited number of 10 day Photographer In Residence programs are available at an introductory price of $7000.00 each (plus GST.) This offer is for bookings made for 2017 by November 30, 2016.

Timing can be set to best suit community activities, seasons and visitor engagement (in minimum blocks of 3 days)
The price includes:

  • A series of ‘real’ lifestyle and landscape images
  • Corporate and / or staged lifestyle / tourism images - 2 day shoot.
  • Collection of eight fine art gallery prints
  • High resolution master files plus versions for web and print output
  • World wide, all media and in perpetuity (non exclusive) usage for client and operators involved in the shoot
  • 2 guided photo walks 
  • 2 operator workshops
Not included:

  • Accommodation / Meal costs
  • Room and catering costs for workshops
  • Travel costs (if applicable)
