Photography is a wonderful, creative outlet in a hectic and sometimes overbearing world. Digital photography has made picture making easier yet more daunting at the same time. Of course, there are plenty of workshops and online tutorials to choose from but which ones are best?

Paul believes that nothing can beat expert one on one mentoring. Targeted mentoring is ideal for both enthusiast and novice photographers. It is effective and fun learning that will nurture and expand the joy of photography.

He loves sharing the rules and techniques he has learnt during a 30 year professional career and enjoys even more showing his students how to bend and break those rules.

'I will guide you towards your own photographic style. I call my approach 'finding pictures' and it provides steps and techniques to make the most of the light you find and the camera you have.'

Online one on one mentoring

Features a series of photographic exercises based on your interests, experience and equipment.

The process includes:

• Interview - An email conversation to discover your photographic interests and experience level. Paul then prepares a mentoring session based on the interview and the number of assignments you buy. Assignments are available individually or in batches of 5 and 10.

• Mentoring - Paul sets assignments that relate to your interest and skill level. They will include suggestions on how to complete the picture and be relevant to your experience and equipment range. Each lesson will lift your capabilities as a photographer.

• Progressive improvement - After each assignment you upload a high res file that Paul will critique and offer suggestions to ensure your ongoing improvement.

In person one on one or two on one mentoring

• Interview - A phone conversation to discover your photographic interests and experience level. Paul then prepares an individual mentoring session based on the interview and the amount of time you book.

• Mentoring - The session takes place at a location relevant to your photographic interests. Paul will make suggestions but it could also be your personal favourite location.

• On-going assessment - Paul will critique up to 10 pictures after the session. He will provide ideas and solutions to any photographic challenges you encountered making them. For best learning outcomes these critiques are best spread over a 4 to 6 week period after the mentoring session.

In person two on one mentoring

• For friends or couples sharing a common photographic interest Paul offers mentoring for two in a single session. Each student can provide their own images during the ongoing assessment component. This is a great way to split the costs and save.

Finding Pictures! Unleash your creativity with this new Workshop

My new Photography Workshop will show keen photographers how to make arresting, thoughtful pictures of wherever they are. Be it on the other side of the world or just outside your door there are unlimited, unique pictures just waiting to be made.

If you, or someone you know, loves making pictures then here's the chance to have a pro show how to get the most from a DSLR camera.* Discover how to train your eye and imagination to see the beauty and the design that makes interesting, captivating photographs. 

Set in Sydney's beautiful and inspiring Botanic gardens the half day workshop will set you on the path to your own style with skills and techniques to nurture inspiration.

Paul will hone your composition skills as well as explain how to use light and shadow to add depth and drama to your photographs. Learn how to control depth of field and add deliberate motion blur as well as the ins and outs of Polarizing and Neutral Density Filters.

This course is designed for the keen enthusiast so you should know the basics of how your camera operates and own a tripod and shutter release.

Making pictures with your camera on a tripod slows down the creative process and gives you time to construct more 'considered' photographs capturing the beauty and details that many others don't even notice. Of course, these skills will also improve your hand held, spontaneous photography. 

The morning will begin with a short classroom session then we will head into the beautiful Gardens and surrounds to make pictures. It will be fun, creative and certainly educational! The Workshop also includes one on one, online tuition in the month after the workshop as Paul will assess up to 5 of your pictures as you practice the lessons learnt.

Class size is limited to just 15 and includes a yummy lunch under the shade of the Garden’s trees. Please feel free to email me directly if you have any specific questions about the workshop.

Portrait Workshop in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens

I am very pleased to let readers know about the Environmental Portrait Workshop I am running in association with the Friends of the Botanic Gardens this October and November.

I have developed it to help owners of DSLR cameras get the most from the unique capabilities that come with the great optics, large sensors, quick focussing and very intelligent exposure systems found in the modern DSLR.

The half day workshop will teach keen amateur photographers, novice and experienced, how to make portraits like a professional with lots of the insights and ideas I've learnt and used over the last 25 years.

In  the beautiful grounds and buildings that Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens are famous for students will spend the morning learning:

• the mechanics of the DSLR & why it is perfect for dynamic, thoughtful portraits
• understanding selective focus and how to use it
• how to frame and compose faces
• how to place subjects in the environment to help your portrait tell their story
• how to use the natural and built environment to shape and control the light in your pictures
• about professional light shaping tools and reflectors and some inexpensive DIY alternatives
• how to use and control your camera's flash system in the automatic and manual modes.

To round out the morning I'll demonstrate modern off camera flash lighting techniques and equipment to give you ideas and inspiration to help you really grow as a creative photographer.

The class runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm but arrive by 9am for a cuppa and a 'get to know you' chat. From 12.30 to 1.30pm The Friends will provide lunch while we review the lessons and I'll answer all of your questions.

To help you get the most from the morning you will be able to submit up to 5 photographs for me to assess and advise on in the month after the workshop. This one on one picture specific tuition will really help your photography and challenge your creativity.

Other classes to follow

These Environmental Portrait workshops are just the beginning. Other half day courses will include close up flora photography and the artistic landscape. For those wanting to really take control of their photography, set up their own digital darkroom and learn about affordable fine art inkjet printing there will be a full day workshop.

The day will begin with a photograph you create in the morning and end with a beautiful archival print you take home with you in the afternoon. Along the way you learn all about the RAW file (the digital negative), creative composition as well as making accurate, easy to print exposures. After lunch you will learn about setting up a digital darkroom and how to calibrate your monitor. You will get hands on use of Lightroom, Adobe's intuitive RAW processing software, while you prepare your file for printing and then print it on a beautiful fine art paper.
